VHS Boxes – A lost artform (The Good)

I’ve got a growing obsession with bad films.  As I’ve mentioned in the past, my other site is a review site of these bad films, and I thought I’d get a little into the origin story of this obsession.

When I was younger, probably about 7 or 8, my family got our first VHS player and there was a local video store that was owned by our mailman that we got a lifetime membership to.  The membership cost $20 and you got 10 free rentals with the membership.  When you went to the store, they had all the vhs boxes out on the shelves with a number on the side of them and when you took the box to the counter they’d get the tape down from a shelf behind and give you the video.

I used to go to the store with my sister all the time and rent movies there.  The one movie that sticks out in my mind that we rented from that store was “The Terminator”.  I remember we rented that movie at least 5 or 6 times and we watched it over and over again.  My sister was usually the one that rented movies, and while my parents weren’t usually too keen on letting us see R rated movies in the theater, oddly they didn’t mind if we rented them and watched them at home.  She was much more into action/adventure films, but horror movies always had the coolest covers, and those are usually the ones I remember the most.  My friend Chris that lived down the street was the one that usually told me about the horror movies because he and his brothers would rent just about anything they could get their hands on.  Now that I’m an adult, and I have the resources to find just about any movie I want, I go back a lot of the time and I get movies that I remember the covers for.  That’s probably also the main reason why most of the movies I write about are movies from the mid 70’s to late 90’s.

The VHS box cover is really a lost art.  Sometimes they’re highly detailed artwork, and sometimes they’re crudely drawn sketches.  They can range from scenes from the movies to shots where the stars heads are superimposed on better bodies, and most of the time they had nothing to do with what the movie was about.  DVD’s really never moved into the territory that VHS artwork had because VHS tapes were cranked out for any garbage movie and a lot of them are never going to see a DVD release.  If they do, there’s probably going to enough work involved in transferring it that they’re going to put some work into remaking a cover too.  Sadly, As we move into the digital age, I think a lot of this artwork is going to disappear altogether.

I also find it ironic that the more I upgrade my tv’s and start streaming content over my home network, the more I find myself watching stuff that’s been ripped from VHS – because that’s the only place that you can find these films

Below the cut are some of the good ones I’ve seen, or I still want to see:

I’ve noticed that these random musings of my daily life are becoming less frequently as of late.  Let me update myself on my life.

Katie recently got her cast off, and is actually walking around.  I started getting resentful being her chauffer for the last few weeks and not really getting any time to myself to do what I want to do.  Once I realized that’s a total dick thought, and this won’t last forever, I got over it.  Hopefully her recovery stays on track and she’ll be back to independence soon.  Today was the first day that she’s been able to drive herself to work, so I’m sure the end is in sight.

This weekend, we went and saw Terminator: Salvation, and I yelled at some 14  year olds because they wouldn’t shut their damned mouths.  Needless to say, I felt like quite the tough guy!  I don’t think it wouldn’t have bothered me so much if I hadn’t just paid almost $40 on movie tickets and popcorns just to have some bratty assed kids dropped off at the movies by mommy and daddy so that they could get some space from their anal spawn.  If your kid can’t shut up, don’t let the movie theater be their baby sitter, please.

I also bought a grill and put it together on Saturday.  I celebrated by drinking myself stupid on Sierra Nevada summer fest lagers, which were delicious (as far as lagers go).  Sunday I grilled at my parents house where James proceded to eat almost everything off the table including about 5 hotdogs and 3 hamburgers which he stuffed into his face at once.  I’m surprised his face doesn’t have it’s own gravitational field once he opens up his mouth.  I also don’t understand how he stays reasonably thin when he eats like a professional football team.

Monday was spent over Katie’s sister’s house where more beers were drunk, in this case Magic Hat Wacko.

Also, in the last week my power supply on my pc shit the bed.  Unfortunately, when I pulled it off, I didn’t realize that the cables ran under my heat sink so that meant more money for thermal paste that the store forgot to send me (or so I thought).  I went to radio shack and got thermal paste and days later after I had everything working again I realized that they taped the thermal paste to the bottom of the power supply box.  Because I never set the box on a solid surface, instead put it either on carpet or on my little futon thing, I never realized it was there.  Now I have two tubes of thermal paste and nothing to use it on.  So.. I think I’m going to save up money to build a new pc.  Hooray.

Promise that you’ll never believe me, because I guess I’m just trying to make it easy.

So, I think I’m gonna go and see Friday the 13th tonight.  I’ve been becoming obsessed with horror movies recently.  It’s weird because I had no desire to read anything about that movie, see any of the images from the movie, or even know what it’s about besides a retelling of the story.

I watched a movie called “The Beast Must Die” which is like a blaxploitation werewolf movie.  The dude in it, Calvin Lockheart, played Silky Slim in “Uptown Saturday Night”, and Biggie Smalls in “Let’s do it Again”.  Again, weird coincidence.

I’ve been coming home and listening to music alone after work.  I have headphones on almost all day, but I listen to podcasts, so when I get home, it’s music.  Katie’s been working later now because of tax season, so when I get home I’m usually by myself for a while.  I’m really enjoying listening to music at home though.  I just sit in my room and surf the net listening to music.  I think I’m gonna put together a playlist together soon.  I used to do that all the time, and since I don’t have as much free time I kind of got away from it.

I was thinking last night that I have all these things that I want to do: make music, learn some more photoshop stuff, illustrator, learn to program, etc.  and instead I end up continuing my xbox live play streak (up to 93 straight days now) instead.  It’s my own fault, so I guess that’s something that I need to take care of.  I guess writing about these movies that I watch is kind of filling that creative void for me.  I’d like for it to eventually lead to something, but if it doesn’t, I’m ok with that too.

I’d like to freelance for some blogs, but I have to find one that doesn’t totally turn me off.  I’ve looked at some postings for people looking for freelancers, but when I visit the sites they never appeal to me. “We’re looking for writers who can write for the 30 – 45 year male demographic” – ok, I’m in that demo now (sigh), let me check out what you’re shit is about… oh, mevermind.  How to make your love life better, make your investments work for you, blah blah blah.  I don’t care about that shit, sorry.  I even bought another domain, don’t know I mentioned that, but I don’t have the foggiest idea what I’m going to do with it.

Now just a bunch of verbal diahrrea is pouring out from my fingertips.   Anyhow, I think I’m gonna go see Friday the 13th tonight, yeah.

I return to cookies on my desk that I can’t eat.

Well, it’s over… My vacation that is.  I thought I might visit this space a little more than I did, but I never got around to it.  The last week and a half went by pretty quickly, and now I’m back at this place.

Christmas was relatively enjoyable.  We had my parents over for dinner on Christmas Eve and had a great dinner.  Afterwards we watched the Dark Knight, which I’ve now watched twice.  While I like the movie and think it’s a good movie, it always feels too long.  I had a couple more 2 hour movie experiences, but I’ll get to those later in this entry, I think.

Christmas we made the trek between my parents house and my in-laws house.  I got decent gifts, most notably a Rice Cooker, a new pair of shoes to wear to the gym, and a cool pac-man hoodie.  It seemed like I got less stuff than usual, which I don’t mind at all.  I’ve found it’s true that as you get older, the gifts don’t really matter as much.  Throughout that week, we had about 4 parties to go to, and I’m happy to say I haven’t gained a pound, even though I neglected the gym during that time.  I also sold my Wii, and I have 4 games of value left, including Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Zelda – Twighlight Princess and Super Paper Mario, so if you know anyone who’s interested, I’ll sell all those games for $100 (or I’ll sell them individually, inquire for details).

I don’t remember at this point, but I know I got drunk at a few of the above mentioned parties.  One night I remember was spent downing Molson Ice, which gave me a wicked headache hours later.

A lot of time was spent playing my 360.  I rarely left the house except to hang out with Jason on one of the days and Frank on another day.  I see a few noteworthy movies, Valkyrie and Marly & Me, which were both over two hours, but didn’t feel like it, unlike the Dark Knight which flowed well, but felt long.  I liked both of those movies.  I also saw The Wrestler (which was great) and JCVD (which was suprisingly good, Van Damme can actually act?  Who knew?).

I didn’t watch any movies for my site, and didn’t get together with Dave or Raz for any of the days to watch anything.  It was a vacation away from all of that.  I did play a lot of games, including Burnout Paradise, Call of Duty World at War and a little bit of Left 4 Dead.  I really like Burnout Paradise, it’s probably the best racing game I played all of last year, and the motorcycle update was really cool.  There’s nothing like cruising the city at top speed trying to break  your friends time records, and other people online.  World at War on the other hand… I’m pretty disappointed.  Even at the easiest difficulties you get killed by unseen enemies constantly and grenades are all over the place.  I decided I was going to just forgo the single player and play multiplayer, since it’s a lot like COD4.  I’ve come to the realization that if I want to play online multiplayer in a shooter like that, I’ll just play COD4, everything is handled a lot better, and I don’t get killed immediately after I spawn.

I’m gonna wrap this entry up by saying that I enjoyed my time off, and I wasn’t looking forward to going back to work, but I am looking forward to getting back into my routine.

slacking the night away

So. I’ve been rather neglectful to my writing as of recent days. Proof being that I haven’t posted anything since the 9th of December and it is currently the 23rd. Nothing terribly exciting has been going on, mostly the humdrum of everyday life and such.

I got most of my holiday shopping out of the way, I still have to buy some stocking stuff for Katie, but other than that, she’s done with. That’s really all I buy for, she handles all of my family and what not.  I got my dad a couple lights for his bike, so he doesn’t get hit by errant cars at night.  He told us he’d be interested in something like that at Thanksgiving, and he came over a few weeks ago and said “You don’t have to get me that light”… Guess what dude, you didn’t give me any other ideas so you’re getting your goddamned light and you’ll like it.  We considered getting James a cosby sweater that he’d hate, just out of spite for the hassle he gave us last year.  My mom and sister got gift cards because they can’t tell us what they want.

Internalbleeding.net is getting a lot of hits this month, probably thanks to our reviews of Silent Night, Deadly Night parts 1 and 2, and the Hulk Hogan masterpiece “Santa with Muscles” which is rated at #49 on IMDB’s bottom 100.  I don’t think it deserves to be ranked that low, because I’ve easily seen 100 worse movies in my lifetime.  Citizen Kane it is not, but it’s definitely no Ziesters (aka Fat Guy goes Nutzoid), that’s for damned sure.

I had my own website stalker, an actor from a movie I reviewed who kept coming to the site and left about 3 comments about the movie.  I won’t mention the movie or the actor because that will draw him towards this fortress of solitude I call my personal blog.  I’m pretty convinced that he searches for mentions of his movie every few days, which I’d probably do too if I was in a movie, but he leaves comments commending his own performance, and poses as if he’s someone else.  Weird.

I have about 6 1/2 hours until an 11 day vacation.  It can’t come soon enough and I have one task to do before the end of the day.  It’ll take me about 1/2 an hour and the rest of the day will be me sitting here staring blankly at the screen, while scrunching my face and rubbing my forehead in a stressful manner to appear as if I am very busy and cannot be bothered.  This is my strategy.

Jason and I are exchanging munny ornaments.  I have quite a few ideas, but I’m having problems with the implementation.  I think I’ve finally decided on a single idea, and I just have to make a visit to the craft store to get all of my supplies.  I think at this point I’m going to wait until after the holiday because it’s too hard to get around right now, especially with Ikea, Lowes, JC Penny, Target, Meijer, Burger King, Taco Bell, Potbelly Sandwiches, Buy Buy Baby, Jimmy Johns, Subway, Macdonalds, Little Ceasars, Homegoods, Outback Steakhouse, Guitar Center, Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club, Gardner White, Bed Bath and Beyond, Dunhams, Marshalls, assorted movie theaters, OTHER MADNESS AND ETC! being right down the street.

Ok, now I’ve lost my train of what little thought I had going through this post, so it’s come to an end.  If I don’t post again before the big day, happy holidays to you and yours, whoever yours may be.

drink this.

I went to a wine/beer tasting on Saturday.  I knew there wasn’t going to be much in the beer department, and I was right.  They had these punch cards that you had to wear around your neck and they were supposed to punch a whole each time you had a drink.  I tried the 8 beers out of 80 different drinks and I tried sake for the first time and didn’t get a punch on my card.  After the tasting we all went out to the bar and had a few beers and played shuffleboard.

Sunday we went out to Mayberry park and hiked around on their trails.  I’d like to go back out there in different clothes and check out a few more of their trails.  We tried to go to a cider mill before the trails, but there were people lined up for a while.  We decided it wasn’t worth standing in line for an hour to get glorified juice.  Besides, I had already eaten like crap and that was just going to pile it on.

I realized that I had a hard drive failure on my hands Monday.  My desktop’s primary drive is taking a massive dump and I can boot my OS for about 30 minutes, max before it reboots.  While it’s an easy fix, I just have to wait for the new drive, and I can’t really get to my movies and music and stuff.  I’m waiting to get screenshots of a movie for my site, so that sucks.

So anyhow, I don’t have really anything to write besides that.  No personal feelings to share – since this really isn’t private, and I don’t feel like putting my feelings out there right now, so… yep, that’s it.

Grim Reaper Kidrobot comes out tomorrow, yay.

Imagine a Karaoke Machine

I have work to do, but I’m just gonna write this instead.

Friday, Raz came over, fell asleep on my couch while watching Tim and Eric, awesome show, great job. We did attempt to watch Return of the Living Dead, and we were successful in that. If you set small goals, they’re easier to attain. He ended up leaving around 11:30 and I was lame and went to bed by midnight. How fucking boring. I’m 31 years old and I go to bed on the weekends by midnight. I get up at 6 sometimes, but still.

On Saturday, I got up at like 9 or someshit, and Katie went out to my inlaws cottage to help them with some golf bullshit, so I stayed home and hooked my 360 back up and played a deathmatch on GTA (FINISHED 2nd, WOO!) and a couple games of Madden, and looked at some other shit, all in preparation for getting my game on SATURDAY NIGHT over RAZ’S HOUSE for a ROCKBAND 2 PARTY! I drank for the first time in like… 3 weeks or something, and ate some chips and drank a bunch of 5 o’clock vodka out of the plastic bottle. I tried to make Raz go drink for drink with me on the shots, but he doesn’t drink often and he only had like 3 sips while I drank a bulk of it and was feeling it. I ended up singing with two other people on some song that I don’t remember and duet with some chick on Psycho Killer by the Talking Heads. She let me sing the high parts, and I was probably awesome. There were a bunch of people I’ll probably never recognize again because I was inebriated. I don’t think I got home until about 3 or so.

Sunday I was awoken at 8am by my nephew, so I said hi and stuff, and Katie covered for me telling him “Uncle Sean has a tummy ache so he’s going to go back to bed” , what an angel… She left to take him to the cottage, and I stayed in bed and recovered. I woke up around 10 and sat on the couch the rest of the day.

I had Monday off, and I watched a couple movies, one documentary called Heavy Load about a punk band in the UK made up of some learning disabled people and some non disabled people. I only caught the last hour or so, but it was pretty interesting. I also watched The Barbarians with David and Peter Paul, also known as the Barbarian brothers… great job!

That night I had my final session with my trainer. I felt like it went kind of crappy, and I didn’t go into my training with the right attitude. I sweat my ass off though, and I felt like I had a good workout at the end. He was really cool, and told me if I had any questions to let him know, and to keep checking back with him, and he’ll help me modify my workout and stuff. I feel like in the 7 weeks we worked together, while I haven’t lost a lot of weight, I’ve lost inches and gained a lot of self confidence. I’ve put on a bunch of muscle and now I’m starting to lose weight a little quicker, which I have to obviously contribute to the muscle gain, the change in my diet, and the increase in my metabolism. I’m also eating the 5 – 6 small meals a day, so that’s helping too.

Today, back to the grind of work. 4 days can’t pass fast enough.

This weekend update keeps getting pushed back further and further. It’s getting to the point where I can’t remember what I did to even write it down. Maybe self hypnotism is the cure. Imagine a waterfall and only listen to the sound of my voice. My voice is calm, soothing, gentle. It wraps around you like a warm blanket, and in it you feel totally secure, like a baby in swaddling clothes…

Friday night Katie and I went to see Pineapple Express. I think too many stoned people in the audience ruined the movie. I really wanted to like it, but after seeing it I don’t know what to think. Anyhow, after the movie we went to dinner, which was sometime around 9:30 or so. With this going to the gym stuff, I get up at 6:30 AM and I get to the point of exhaustion by 11 PM if I’m lucky. Anyhow, after dinner, I pretty much went to bed.

Saturday, we woke up and watched some of the olympics, and eventually made it out to Sam’s club for some stuff we needed to pick up. Afterwards, we slacked off a little bit before we went to the Baseball game. It was a little sprinkly throughout the game, and these two older couples sat in front of us. It starts to lightly mist, and these 4 douchebags pull out fucking golf umbrellas, totally blocking out my view. Seriously, I can only make out the top of the scoreboard over these umbrellas. I’ll upload a picture of it. While I’m texting someone about it, they start to put down their umbrellas and one of the guys is like “It’s just sprinkling, I think we can take these down” and the woman looks back at me, sees me texting and says “Oh, he’s not paying attention anyhow” Eat a big steamy pile of my greasy shit and die in a fire. After the game, We got home a little late and again, went to bed early.

Sunday morning we went grocery shopping and picked up a few other things. I went over Dave’s house to drink beer and eat pizza, and we watched “Yor: Hunter from the Future” and “Deadly Prey”, two movies that were so bad they were decent.

Monday was work and then slack, and today I went to the gym again. After work, Jason and I are going to go to Lift to see their Munny show, and Hopefully they have the Kozik Murder Dr. Bomb, but I’m doubting they will. Plus madden comes out today, so I’ll be spending money on that. yay!

Where’d you get those eyes?

If I have to hear “Jeepers Creepers, where’d you get those peepers” or the Kill Bill whistled song one more time, bad things are going to happen. Very bad things.

Another Monday has arrived, and alas, another weekend has passed.

Friday, I went over Raz’s house and we watched Night of the Living Dead. It’s been a while since I saw that the last time, probably something like 6 or 7 years, if not longer. I got burnt out on that movie and couldn’t watch it for a long time, but it was almost refreshing to watch it this time. I picked up a lot more on the social commentary that Romero was trying to infuse into it. After the movie, Raz and I played GTA, and just blew up cars for 3 or 4 hours. Sometimes it’s just fun to do that for a while. I got home really late, like 4:45am, and for some reason it took me until 5:30 to get to sleep. I woke up at around 10:30 Saturday morning, and had to get ready for…

Summerfest. I had been told for years that Summerfest was actually called Lakefest. You can imaging my shock and horror when I found out the true name of this stupid drunkathon that I had been going to each summer for the past 3 years. Anyhow, after I got over that, I drank about 8 beers or so until I got bored doing that and started falling asleep. Unfortunately, no one would left me fucking fall asleep, so I sat awake, with my head bobbing into another world while fireworks bursted over my head at 10pm. When that was finally over, I passed out in the car, somehow made it into bed and slept until around 11am Sunday.

Sunday I woke up mostly refreshed with aching kidneys, took a shower, and went with Katie to see The Dark Knight. I was pretty surprised that it was as packed as it was at the theater on a Sunday morning at 11:40. There was this massive group outside the theater, and I thought it was a line, but it ended up being a church group. Why there was a church group hanging out at a movie theater, I have no idea. They weren’t even there to see a movie, as far as I could tell. They were just loitering outside the theater making it hard for everyone to get inside.

GET OUT OF THE WAY, fuck. I hate when people stand in the middle of the flow of foot traffic in a group. They just stop and stand there and stare at each other in the middle of this stream of walking people. Like stupid rocks standing in the middle of a river, causing bottlenecks and rapids. Eat shit and get out of the way.

Anyhow, The Dark Knight was great. I really enjoyed it a lot. I was surprised at some of the story elements, but I really enjoyed it, and would actually like to check it out in IMAX. After the movie, Katie and I went to get lunch/dinner at a mongolian bbq type place in Northville, and to target and bed, bath and beyond looking for a lapdesk for our new laptop. After that, I relaxed the rest of the night and vegged out.

super computer and microchip

So…  Let me tell you about my weekend.

Not much has happened recently.  The weekend was fairly boring.  Friday night when I got home from work, my new laptop was waiting for me.  I ended up setting it up and slacking with it all that night.  It’s fun for me to fuck around with a new computer for a while, checking everything out for the first time.

Saturday, I texted a few people and called around to see if anyone wanted to see Hellboy II, but I ended up going to the movie by myself for the first time ever.  Now I can say that I’ve finally eaten at a restaurant by myself, and seen a movie all by myself.  I was really excited to see Hellboy, and I wasn’t disappointed.  Whenever I go to the movie recently, I’ve been going either in the morning, or right near noon.  When I get there, I end up analyzing the parking lot to figure out how many people are there, and in my head I try to figure out if they’re trying to see the movie I’m seeing.  Saturday the parking lot was pretty full (I parked 2 spaces from Jason, but I don’t think he noticed I was parked there), so I thought maybe everyone was seeing Hellboy, and there were a few people I had pegged.  One person I did not have pegged was the middle aged woman who came by herself and sat down 2 seats away from me.  I couldn’t tell if she was really into the movie, or if she was just one of those people who are bored and see a bunch of movies.  Overall, I really enjoyed the movie, and want to see it again.  It was definitey on par with Iron Man and the Incredible Hulk, in my opinion.

Sunday, I headed over Dave’s and drank some Lienenkugel Summer Shandy, which is this Weiss with Lemonade, but the lemon taste was a little overpowering after the first two beers or so..  We ended up watching another Peter O’Brian film – “Rambu” and Diary of the Dead, which was ok.  It was a little better than Land of the Dead, but I was hoping it was going to be a lot better.

I’m back at work.  I could feel my soul floating away as I walked in the door.

I’ll try and recap the last few days of my life in a concise manner.  Expect this to turn into a rambling mess.

I left work Wednesday primarily because I wanted to, but also because someone here was getting on my nerves.  They were crying and whining about their stupid life and their stupid work imposed goals and they were just too stupid to figure out anything.  “But I talked to so and so in such and such and they said that…” Guess what, fuck?  I am one of the 5 people trained in the region on this program, and you’re going to ask some fucking slack jawed mongoloid if I’m doing something wrong?  You can eat a pile of my defecation.  I’m outta here!

So that was Wednesday.  I spent the rest of the day convalescing, and turning that into Thursday.  I basically got nothing accomplished that day, until about 7pm, when Dave came over and we watched The Last House on the Left, and Undefeatable.  Raz ended up coming over too and we watched one of the best movies I’ve ever seen, called THE STABILIZER.  This guy that stars in The Stabilizer, Peter O’Brian, looks like a more retarded version of Sylvester Stallone.  The movie is in english, where they dub over people’s voices because they probably have some kind of asian accent, but this O’Brian character (who is American) has his voice overdubbed too!  He can barely open his mouth when he talks, so I can understand why they don’t let him talk.  There’s this awesome picture of him in one of those fishnet shirts… I’ll have to post it when I get a chance to capture it.  Anyhow, that movie is great.

Friday was the 4th, and I went to my in-laws cottage, which sucks the life out of me.  It seems like we can never go there and just hang out with the family, they always have some friends coming over.   It was somewhat bareable, drinking skunky Bud lite.   I just really don’t like it there.  It seems everytime we go there we end up doing work.  We got home around 11 and I was bushed, so I headed to bed.

Saturday was time to visit my parents.  We cooked out on the grill and played Uno, which is tradition.  James actually hung around for a while, which is unusual, and played with us.  We got home late again that night.

Sunday Katie went to the cottage again, and I went to see Hancock with Jason.  Hancock… eh.  It was really predictable, and cheesy.  They said “Fuck you” “shit” “asshole”, etc. but the first 3 minutes of the movie, they play that Ludacris song “Move bitch” and it’s edited so “Bitch” isn’t in the movie… WTF? It’s ok to call some dude an asshole 4 times in a row (BTW, you can say anything you want to Hancock, just don’t call him an asshole!), but you can’t say bitch?  Who are you protecting by not saying that word?  Whatever, it was fucking horseshit anyhow.  That was the highlight of Sunday.

Monday… I wrote about.  That was about all I did on Monday. yeah.

That’s odd, he seems to be getting stronger as he melts!

I got a spam comment about christian music ringtones.  Yeah.  I’m sure there are several things about this collection of thoughts that just scream out “THIS GUY LOVES CHRISTIAN MUSIC!  GOLLY GEE HECK, I’M SURE HE’S A GOOD CHRISTIAN MAN!” die

I have several things to write about, but I don’t know if I’ll write them all down just now.

I primarily stopped by to convey this special moment that happened today.

I was watching “the incredible melting man” and at the beginning, they have the MGM logo with the lion in the little circle on the screen.  Coal, my cat, was laying in the sun, as she is wont to do, right in front of the television.  As the lion roars feriociously, Coal, being the brave killer cat that she is, jumps no less than a foot in the air, lands, runs about 2 tiny kitty steps, and pulls a 180 to look glaringly at the television set.  It really was a scene out of America’s funniest home videos.  If I had a video camera, I could have gotten some money, because I had the funny.  Hells yeah.

It’s been a while.

I’ll start off with what I can remember from the weekend.

Friday I left work early so I could take Katie to pick up her car from the dealership. She had some belts replaced because her car sounded like one of those old cars in the cartoons, wheezing and sputtering down the road. Afterwards, I went and saw the Tigers lose to the Twins, with Mark and Ruairi. After the game was over we went to Motor City Brew Works, off of Second street near MLK Jr. drive. I hadn’t been there before, but they had really good beer. We met Fred there and he gave me a slice of pizza, which was also pretty good, even though it had mushrooms on it.

Saturday I went over Dave’s and he and Matt and I saw Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull(s?). I thought overall it was a good an entertaining movie, in the same vein as the others in the series. I thought Harrison Ford looked really good considering he’s 65, and Shia Labouf(sp?) did pretty well too. I think he’s a decent actor, despite what most people I know think of him. I had a few complaints about the movie – mostly the overuse of CGI where it didn’t really need to be. The whole jungle scene was pretty ridiculous. My feeling about Indy movies is that they never needed to rely on CGI to make it believable in the past, so did they just do it to do it? Just to be flashy? I also don’t think I’d be complaining too much if it actually looked good. Most of the CGI looked really weak, which I was suprised with considering the FX were handled by Lucas’s own company. Other than that, I think it was a good addition to the series.

After the movie, I stayed over Dave’s and we eventually ended up watching the Tigers, Pistons, and the Red Wing games that were on that night. After banging around on Rockband for a little bit, I headed home.

On Sunday I went to make a transaction for part of Katie’s birthday gift, which turned out excellent. I was a little tense about it, because the timing was crucial. Afterwards, Katie and I went to Carrie and Fred’s for a cookout they were having. The food was good, and I drank more beers than I care to count (mostly because I lost count somewhere after 5 or 8 or something) and I sat nearly comatose in the passenger seat on the way home. Needless to say, Monday morning was rough.

Monday, we went and saw Prince Caspian, which was ok but not as good as the first movie. Afterwards we relaxed for a little bit before going over my parents house for another cookout. I ended up cooking burgers and bratwurst over there, and we ate outside. It was a little warm out, but nice enough that sweat wasn’t dripping into food, which is nice.

Yesterday we ran to IKEA to pick up some more shit, and a rollerblind for our front bedroom which hasn’t had a shade of any kind for at least a year and a half. When Jeremy comes to town, he’ll be happy to know that there’s a shade up.  I also caught up from issue 1 of Invincible, and I’m almost up to date with The Walking Dead.  I’m thinking of starting a pull list from my local comic shop, but I only have 3 things so far that I can think of that I’d like to read, and I don’t want to look like too much of a Robert Kirkman fanboy, so I need to broaden my horizons a little before I do that.

Nobody watches television ’cause he’s got a better show

I had a dream last night about my old roommate phil. I was walking around, and I saw him walking down the street on the other side, in the opposite direction. I started calling him out for being a punk and some other assorted names. He turned around, crossed the street and he started fighting with me, but I was defending myself instead of fighting back. I ended up getting some woman to help me take him down to the police station to get him put in jail. I remember saying to him “you got a place to live? If not, you’re gonna have somewhere to stay for a long time.” and also calling him a failure as often as possible. I hope you rot, phil.

Anyhow, I feel like I have a full week, but I’m really only doing stuff after work tonight and tomorrow night. Tonight is the Tigers game vs. the Red Sox – here’s hoping they win one tonight. Tomorrow is the Ministry show- which I am pumped for. I don’t know if you can hear words on a website, but I’m PUMPED. The last few Ministry albums have been really good, so I’m expecting a good show. I can’t forget to bring ear plugs because if I do, my ears will be done for.

Because this week until Thursday is spoken for, I haven’t been able to review any craptacular movies, and really should have watched more on my vacation and stocked up on reviews. I really need to keep up with content. I thought about watching something last night, but it was pretty late by the time I was going to get around to it, and I was tired and wouldn’t have been able to put all of my awesome creative energy into it.
