Work is where the hate is

I haven’t had much time recently, and while I still don’t have much time now, I figured I should update so I can look back on this date and see that I was still a live.

My birthday passed 11 days ago, thanks to those who wished well wishes. I’m now officially a year older.  I think I’m in a better place health wise than last year and that feels pretty good.  Not too much else has changed that I can think of besides that.

I went out bowling for a few games with my mom and dad and Frank, and I think I had a 600 series… maybe. If not, I know it was at least a 580 series, which I think is actually my best series ever.  Not too shabby for not bowling in about 2 years.  Afterwards I went to dinner with my parents, my sister and her husband, and Katie.  We had ice cream and cake and then Dave came over and we watched the Hatton vs. Pacquaio fight.  While I’m a huge Ricky Hatton fan, I also like Manny Pacquaio quite a bit too so either fighter winning would have been fine with me, but I was not surprised by the outcome.

I took last week off, and I usually don’t update when I’m on vacation for some reason or another.  Mostly I took the week off because I like to have the week either before or after my birthday off, but also because Wednesday Katie had foot surgery and I knew that my help would be needed since she wouldn’t be able to do much on her own besides hobble around on crutches.  That occupied my time for the rest of the week/weekend.  I don’t think we left the house more than 3 times between Wednesday and Saturday, and that was probably just to go get coffee or pick up a pizza or something and just to get out of the house for a few minutes.

Katie is a stubborn as a mule though.  She wanted to go out shopping or whatever like the day after her surgery.  I may spend money irresponsibly or whatever, but she just likes to shop.  She won’t even necessarily buy anything, but she enjoys the aspect of looking at every single item in the store.  When I shop for something, I have a clear idea of what I’m looking for and I don’t like to float around, browsing.  I go right for what I want and if they don’t have it, I leave.  She can turn a 10 minute shopping experience into hours, and that has got to be some kind of black magic shit right there.

Other than that, I used some of my birthday funds and some money I had been saving and bought a PS3.  It came with Motorstorm and Resistance: Fall of Man, which I haven’t opened and I bought Killzone 2.  In addition to that, I bought a game from their online store called Pixel Junk: Eden, which is really an awesome game.  I spent quite a few hours just swinging around and enjoying myself.  I’ll include a little boring clip of the game at the end of this post if the 2 other people that read this are interested in checking it out.

When I got back to work, I had a mess of stuff that needed attention and only just recently did I get caught up (and by recently, I mean like minutes ago).  It only took me about 3 and 1/2 hours to say to myself “These people are fucking idiots”, so I’m pretty proud of that… I knew I was back in my favorite place!

Rag Tag Heroes

Since we last spoke, I went to Lakeland, Floriday to watch the Detroit Tigers play in some spring training games.  The weather was really nice – around 80 degrees, and low humidity – that’s the key.  I actually used sunblock and didn’t get purple burns on my skin like the last time I was in Florida, so that was good.  The Tigers went 1-1 to the games that we saw, so it wasn’t too bad.  Jeremy and I mostly spent the day at the game and the night in the hotel room drinking beers.  Maybe we should have taken better advantage of the time we spent there, although we did walk to 7-11 on one of the days, so that’s something.

I’m going to attempt to cook with a wok tonight.  I got my rice cooker out on Tuesday and figured out how to work that, so now I’m going to try to make some fried rice.  While I have some of the stuff necessary to make an honest to goodness stir fry, we always seem to be deficient of vegetables.  While the rice cooks, I’ll probably go out and get the rest of the stuff for my sauce and marinade.

I’ve been slacking hardcore on the gym this year, and I actually went on Tuesday for cardio.  I’ve missed the last few days and I feel myself getting complacent so I decided yesterday that I’m going to try the 100 burpee challenge.  If you don’t know what a burpee is, I’ll tell you that it isn’t a little burp.  It’s an excersize where you start standing, then you crouch down, and put your hands down, and push your feet back so that you’re into a pushup position.  Once you drop into the pushup position, you go all the way down so that you’re on your chest, then you push yourself up.  At that point, you bring your feet back underneath you into a squat, stand straight up and then jump into the air.  When you get back to your feet, you start the whole thing over again, in rapid succession.  Here’s what I’m talking about:

So, what the 100 burpee challenge is, is on day 1, you do 1 burpee.  On day 2, you do 2 burpees. Day 3, you do 3, etc.  If you miss a day, you make up all of those burpees on the next day, plus the ones that you have to do for that day.  So, if you miss day 49, on day 50, you do 99 burpees.  They don’t have to all be right in a row, as I plan on doing about 10 in a set when I get past day 15 or so.  I’m also doing a few extra just to make sure I get the right form down.  I can already tell this is going to be a good test, and something that will be a good supplement to my current workout.  I guess it won’t hurt right?  Plus, I’m looking for something to help me kickstart my weightloss, since that’s slowed since I’ve slacked off.

I return to cookies on my desk that I can’t eat.

Well, it’s over… My vacation that is.  I thought I might visit this space a little more than I did, but I never got around to it.  The last week and a half went by pretty quickly, and now I’m back at this place.

Christmas was relatively enjoyable.  We had my parents over for dinner on Christmas Eve and had a great dinner.  Afterwards we watched the Dark Knight, which I’ve now watched twice.  While I like the movie and think it’s a good movie, it always feels too long.  I had a couple more 2 hour movie experiences, but I’ll get to those later in this entry, I think.

Christmas we made the trek between my parents house and my in-laws house.  I got decent gifts, most notably a Rice Cooker, a new pair of shoes to wear to the gym, and a cool pac-man hoodie.  It seemed like I got less stuff than usual, which I don’t mind at all.  I’ve found it’s true that as you get older, the gifts don’t really matter as much.  Throughout that week, we had about 4 parties to go to, and I’m happy to say I haven’t gained a pound, even though I neglected the gym during that time.  I also sold my Wii, and I have 4 games of value left, including Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Zelda – Twighlight Princess and Super Paper Mario, so if you know anyone who’s interested, I’ll sell all those games for $100 (or I’ll sell them individually, inquire for details).

I don’t remember at this point, but I know I got drunk at a few of the above mentioned parties.  One night I remember was spent downing Molson Ice, which gave me a wicked headache hours later.

A lot of time was spent playing my 360.  I rarely left the house except to hang out with Jason on one of the days and Frank on another day.  I see a few noteworthy movies, Valkyrie and Marly & Me, which were both over two hours, but didn’t feel like it, unlike the Dark Knight which flowed well, but felt long.  I liked both of those movies.  I also saw The Wrestler (which was great) and JCVD (which was suprisingly good, Van Damme can actually act?  Who knew?).

I didn’t watch any movies for my site, and didn’t get together with Dave or Raz for any of the days to watch anything.  It was a vacation away from all of that.  I did play a lot of games, including Burnout Paradise, Call of Duty World at War and a little bit of Left 4 Dead.  I really like Burnout Paradise, it’s probably the best racing game I played all of last year, and the motorcycle update was really cool.  There’s nothing like cruising the city at top speed trying to break  your friends time records, and other people online.  World at War on the other hand… I’m pretty disappointed.  Even at the easiest difficulties you get killed by unseen enemies constantly and grenades are all over the place.  I decided I was going to just forgo the single player and play multiplayer, since it’s a lot like COD4.  I’ve come to the realization that if I want to play online multiplayer in a shooter like that, I’ll just play COD4, everything is handled a lot better, and I don’t get killed immediately after I spawn.

I’m gonna wrap this entry up by saying that I enjoyed my time off, and I wasn’t looking forward to going back to work, but I am looking forward to getting back into my routine.

get home, get down

I’ve been feeling pretty crappy after I’ve been working out lately.  I’m trying to remain vigilant, but it’s hard when it’s dark outside when you get up in the morning, but I need to stay focused.  I have a goal that I want to reach by the end of the year, and I’ll feel disappointed if I don’t make it.

This weekend was pretty decent.  Friday Raz came over and we watched “Silent Night, Deadly Night” of which there are 4 sequels, which I plan on watching before the 25th.  We didn’t do much beside that and then watched some Tim and Eric stuff.

On Saturday, Jason and I went out to Lift and I bought a Frank Kozik 8″ Redrum Dunny, much like this one, which Kent, the owner, had one left over from when they originally went on sale in 2006.  It’s in mint condition, so I’m pretty happy about that.  Afterwards, we went to the Royal Oak Brewery and had a few drinks, with Erik meeting us there.  After that we went back to Lift for their winter munny show that I mentioned in my last post (I still need to get pictures off of my camera).  Erik picked up a Triston Eaton lift exclusive Mad*l citizen, which I believe is his first vinyl purchase, besides a DIY munny he bought a while back.  Anyhow, after the show, Jason and I were joined by Dave at my house to watch Oscar De La Hoya predictably get his ass beat by Manny Pacquiao.  I so should have put money on that fight…

Sunday, Katie and I went to a rememberance service (I’m not sure exactly what it’s called) with her family at Holy Cross church in Detroit.  Of the limited times I’ve been to Catholic service, this one was pretty fascinating as it was 95% in Hungarian.  Afterwards, we went to a Hungarian restuarant and had lunch, which was friggin awesome.  I can’t believe I’ve disliked stuffed cabbage for so long, it was great.  After that, I vegged out and played games and shit and went to the gym.

Monday was back to work, and so the saga continues.

Imagine a Karaoke Machine

I have work to do, but I’m just gonna write this instead.

Friday, Raz came over, fell asleep on my couch while watching Tim and Eric, awesome show, great job. We did attempt to watch Return of the Living Dead, and we were successful in that. If you set small goals, they’re easier to attain. He ended up leaving around 11:30 and I was lame and went to bed by midnight. How fucking boring. I’m 31 years old and I go to bed on the weekends by midnight. I get up at 6 sometimes, but still.

On Saturday, I got up at like 9 or someshit, and Katie went out to my inlaws cottage to help them with some golf bullshit, so I stayed home and hooked my 360 back up and played a deathmatch on GTA (FINISHED 2nd, WOO!) and a couple games of Madden, and looked at some other shit, all in preparation for getting my game on SATURDAY NIGHT over RAZ’S HOUSE for a ROCKBAND 2 PARTY! I drank for the first time in like… 3 weeks or something, and ate some chips and drank a bunch of 5 o’clock vodka out of the plastic bottle. I tried to make Raz go drink for drink with me on the shots, but he doesn’t drink often and he only had like 3 sips while I drank a bulk of it and was feeling it. I ended up singing with two other people on some song that I don’t remember and duet with some chick on Psycho Killer by the Talking Heads. She let me sing the high parts, and I was probably awesome. There were a bunch of people I’ll probably never recognize again because I was inebriated. I don’t think I got home until about 3 or so.

Sunday I was awoken at 8am by my nephew, so I said hi and stuff, and Katie covered for me telling him “Uncle Sean has a tummy ache so he’s going to go back to bed” , what an angel… She left to take him to the cottage, and I stayed in bed and recovered. I woke up around 10 and sat on the couch the rest of the day.

I had Monday off, and I watched a couple movies, one documentary called Heavy Load about a punk band in the UK made up of some learning disabled people and some non disabled people. I only caught the last hour or so, but it was pretty interesting. I also watched The Barbarians with David and Peter Paul, also known as the Barbarian brothers… great job!

That night I had my final session with my trainer. I felt like it went kind of crappy, and I didn’t go into my training with the right attitude. I sweat my ass off though, and I felt like I had a good workout at the end. He was really cool, and told me if I had any questions to let him know, and to keep checking back with him, and he’ll help me modify my workout and stuff. I feel like in the 7 weeks we worked together, while I haven’t lost a lot of weight, I’ve lost inches and gained a lot of self confidence. I’ve put on a bunch of muscle and now I’m starting to lose weight a little quicker, which I have to obviously contribute to the muscle gain, the change in my diet, and the increase in my metabolism. I’m also eating the 5 – 6 small meals a day, so that’s helping too.

Today, back to the grind of work. 4 days can’t pass fast enough.

My favorite was always “Clyde”

I remember the first time I played pac-man, my sister told me that I had to stay away from the ghosts, but I could eat the blue ones.  The ghosts are colored red, orange, blue and pink – so what did I do?  I went right at “Inky” the light blue one.  That was confusing.

I don’t have any idea why I thought of that, but I’ve had that memory in my head for the last 2 days, and i figured I’d get it out of here sooner or later.

I went to lunch early today, but took a little extra time.  It was OK though because I went out with my boss and he didn’t care.  I had subway, and now my stomach hurts.  You wouldn’t think you’d get a sore stomach from subway, but the impossible has happened.

tube of you.

I have to say, I’m glad I started posting ridiculously cheesy videos onto youtube because I’m totally reaping the rewards. After having some videos on for a few months, I’m starting to get comments on a somewhat regular basis, and while most of them don’t make any sense, some of them can be particularly amusing. I also enjoy seeing where these videos have been getting linked from. I haven’t been brave enough, however to film myself and post anything, thankfully.

Anyhow, I watched Football all yesterday and didn’t drink at all. I usually don’t drink like a case or anything by myself, but I went over Tim’s and I didn’t drink a single alcoholic beverage. Usually if I go out, I drink. I didn’t do that yesterday so I feel accomplished.

On the other hand, I’ve been going to the gym less, so I feel defeated, but I’m recommitting myself this week. I don’t enjoy weights much, but I do enjoy cardio. I’m switching my schedule to do more weights now and less cardio. I want to find a mix that I can drink after a workout that contains enough carbs and protein so that I don’t have to always rush home and eat after I’m done.

Saturday, I spent time putting a new handle on my storm door, now I have to put on the lock. I need longer screws though because the ones that came in the package weren’t long enough to attach the lock. We also finished painting our bathroom upstairs. We’ve been showering in our other bathroom, and the water pressure is so high it feels like it’s going to knock my face off of my head. I just started getting used to it, and now we’re going to go back to the low water pressure world of upstairs, and it’s going to feel too weak. Whatever.

Friday night, Raz came over and we watched She-Wolves of the wasteland, which was horrible. Then we played Castle Crashers on XBLA which is probably my favorite live game so far. I can say it’s gotta be one of the games I’ve played the most of so far. I’ve also been splitting gaming time between Spore, the Warhammer Online Beta and Madden 09 (which I need to play more). Lots of games are coming up this holiday season that I’m interested in. I enjoy all these games coming out, but I don’t enjoy that they all come out at the same time and I don’t have time to really commit to them 🙁

It’s been a while.

I’ll start off with what I can remember from the weekend.

Friday I left work early so I could take Katie to pick up her car from the dealership. She had some belts replaced because her car sounded like one of those old cars in the cartoons, wheezing and sputtering down the road. Afterwards, I went and saw the Tigers lose to the Twins, with Mark and Ruairi. After the game was over we went to Motor City Brew Works, off of Second street near MLK Jr. drive. I hadn’t been there before, but they had really good beer. We met Fred there and he gave me a slice of pizza, which was also pretty good, even though it had mushrooms on it.

Saturday I went over Dave’s and he and Matt and I saw Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull(s?). I thought overall it was a good an entertaining movie, in the same vein as the others in the series. I thought Harrison Ford looked really good considering he’s 65, and Shia Labouf(sp?) did pretty well too. I think he’s a decent actor, despite what most people I know think of him. I had a few complaints about the movie – mostly the overuse of CGI where it didn’t really need to be. The whole jungle scene was pretty ridiculous. My feeling about Indy movies is that they never needed to rely on CGI to make it believable in the past, so did they just do it to do it? Just to be flashy? I also don’t think I’d be complaining too much if it actually looked good. Most of the CGI looked really weak, which I was suprised with considering the FX were handled by Lucas’s own company. Other than that, I think it was a good addition to the series.

After the movie, I stayed over Dave’s and we eventually ended up watching the Tigers, Pistons, and the Red Wing games that were on that night. After banging around on Rockband for a little bit, I headed home.

On Sunday I went to make a transaction for part of Katie’s birthday gift, which turned out excellent. I was a little tense about it, because the timing was crucial. Afterwards, Katie and I went to Carrie and Fred’s for a cookout they were having. The food was good, and I drank more beers than I care to count (mostly because I lost count somewhere after 5 or 8 or something) and I sat nearly comatose in the passenger seat on the way home. Needless to say, Monday morning was rough.

Monday, we went and saw Prince Caspian, which was ok but not as good as the first movie. Afterwards we relaxed for a little bit before going over my parents house for another cookout. I ended up cooking burgers and bratwurst over there, and we ate outside. It was a little warm out, but nice enough that sweat wasn’t dripping into food, which is nice.

Yesterday we ran to IKEA to pick up some more shit, and a rollerblind for our front bedroom which hasn’t had a shade of any kind for at least a year and a half. When Jeremy comes to town, he’ll be happy to know that there’s a shade up.  I also caught up from issue 1 of Invincible, and I’m almost up to date with The Walking Dead.  I’m thinking of starting a pull list from my local comic shop, but I only have 3 things so far that I can think of that I’d like to read, and I don’t want to look like too much of a Robert Kirkman fanboy, so I need to broaden my horizons a little before I do that.

It is mine

after months of waiting…

paying for it 3 weeks ago…

it’s finally in my possession…

and I don’t plan on leaving the house at all for the rest of the week.  I got my huge mountain dew amp slurpee that will probably result in me having several small heart attacks before I finally pass out due to exhaustion, but i have it nonetheless burning a hole in my stomach with it’s caffeine.  I picked it up tonight at midnight, and there were about 70 people in line.  I was probably around #50, and there were several people that showed up after I was in the store.  I’d expand more but at this time I’m getting sweats, so I have to play now… bye for a week!

It smells here today. I can’t exactly place what the smell is. Maybe a paint of some sort, or a really bad coffee.

Yesterday I formatted and reinstalled xp sp3 on my desktop. It had been running like hot garbage. My mouse cursor would freeze, but the mouse still worked, and everything was running super ass slow. I got fed up with it and after making sure to move everything valuable off of the drive, I commenced with the insanity. Another problem I had was that I had stuff installed on that partition, but overall it was really small. I kept getting notifications that I was running out of space, which was goddamned annoying.

Of course after I reinstalled, and thought to myself, “I’m sure I’m forgetting something to move over” and I was. All of my mail. Fun. I had a lot of email that I probably should have deleted though, so it’s probably a blessing in disguise.  Then the rest of the night was spent getting everything back to the way I like it.

Unfortunately because of all that fun, I didn’t get a chance to watch a movie last night like I wanted to. I also wanted to try our Multi Theft Auto – which is a multiplayer mod for the GTA III series on the PC. I was listening to a podcast and one of the guys mentioned that he was playing on a server where people actually played out roles in the game. There were people who actually played as cab drivers, and normal citizens. The admins would play cops and police the server. This guy said that he and his friends went in using the clown character model and just wreaked havoc. They got caught an were put into a jail in the game where they had to get a lawyer, and if you could get sentenced to having your character in jail for months. Wow… that’s getting pretty involved.

So… two days left until my week vacation. 5 days until GTA IV.
